Precious gemstones including diamonds have long been thought to give special power.
Precious gemstones have been throughout history mysterious and magical substances powerful and mystical materials. They have been witness to history, long before the advent of man. They saw many natural upheavals in earth's early developing stages.
Since man came on the scene, these mysterious gemstones have been an important element in, and seen a lot of history. Natural gemstones have been valued by man since earliest times and been given favor in the history of man.
From earliest history since man came into being, precious gemstones such as diamond, pearls, rubies, and many other gemstones have at times enjoyed exclusivity among only certain classes. In early days in many cultures, it was an unlawful offense for anyone except for kings and emperors to own or wear precious gemstones. Amethyst was highly esteemed by royalty for it's purple color.
As time passed, precious gemstones were allowed among the aristocracy, and finally after time was allowed for the other classes who had the financial means.
The power of precious gemstones.
These gemstones were looked upon with much respect by the various cultures and included in adornment for many reasons. In the case of royalty they were a show of special privilege and gave them extra power and protection. Warriors had battle gear embedded with a variety of these gemstones, in particular, diamonds, as it was believed they would make them invincible.
During the middle ages precious gemstones were not considered so much a style accessory, but as a talisman which would protect the wearer or to dispense a special ability.
Many precious gemstones have been important in a variety of beliefs of different cultures down through the centuries. Early Egyptians and Romans coupled topaz the gemstone with their god of the sun. Ancient Chinese legend told of pearls coming from the sky when dragons were fighting. Garnets were included in battle dress during the crusades because of a belief that they would heal wounds and illness.
The Christian religion includes much about gemstones in symbolism. There are a lot of times spread throughout the Christian bible where important events and symbolism were elevated to great importance through the use of the gemstones such as emeralds and sapphires.
Down through much of history, many of the gemstones have been worn by clergymen to convey many signs, including purity and a variety of attributes of value to each faith.

We are fortunate in this day and time that precious gemstones and diamonds are allowed to all who have the financial means. Diamonds are now the standard for engagement rings and are made available in a range of prices and sizes to fit most pocketbooks.
Pearls being a notable gemstone since this is the only gemstone that is brought into creation by a live creature, in place of being created deep inside the earth by the forces of nature.
The development of cultured pearls in the early 1900's has put the pearl within the means of many, where long ago they were only available to, royalty or the ultra rich.
During the reign of Cleopatra a tale is handed down that she wagered with Marc Antony that she could have the most costly dinner ever in history. As the table was set with empty plates he wondered how she was going to accomplish this, when she crushed one of her pearl earrings, and drop it into sour wine which dissolved the pearl, and then she drank it. It is estimated that, at this current time in history that pearl could cost as much as $9,000,000. A very high priced dinner, indeed.
When the Roman Empire ruled the world and pearls were highly prized, an important general is claimed to have paid for an entire military campaign by selling one of his morther's pearl earrings.
Many of the gemstones frequently are worn as birthstones in rings, necklaces and other jewelry items and are also featured in pieces of jewelry to be enjoyed whether that particular gemstone is your designated birthstone or not. Each gemstone is defined with a history of mystical powers it will bestow upon the wearer.
Today we have the liberty of savoring symbolic or mystical powers granted by gemstones despite our station in life. Unlike many material things we own today, the gemstones are each unique, and are unlike any other, nature has given individual characteristics to each one.
